Byron Bay, widely renowned as one of Northern New South Wales most vibrant and picturesque towns, is famous for being the most easterly point on the Australian mainland. The headland is the perfect vantage point from which to admire stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, surrounding coastal cliffs, dolphins and migrating whales.

The Construction of the Cape Byron lighthouse, located at the end of Lighthouse Road, was completed in 1901 and attracts over 500,000 visitors a year. The light, originally powered by a six-wick burner, became Australia’s most powerful in 1956 when it was converted over to mains electricity. A lighthouse keeper was still in residence on site until 1989, when the workings were fully automated. The lighthouse stands 22 metres high and 94 metres above sea level on the edge of a spectacular headland. Those without a fear of heights can ascend to the top floor balcony of the tower to enjoy the view via an internal spiral staircase.

Visitors are invited to attend daily guided tours of the lighthouse, or to more fully immerse yourself in the experience book a stay in one of the fully refurbished (heritage listed, circa 1901) lighthouse keeper cottages. From the lighthouse the more adventurous can also set off on the Cape Byron walking track, a 3.7km long trail that leads you along the spectacular coast line through pockets of pristine rainforest.

Make time to explore the town and soak up the local’s laidback bohemian lifestyle. If you have a taste for the eclectic Byron is a shopper’s paradise. Take a leisurely stroll down the main street and enjoy browsing through the vast array of upmarket boutiques featuring anything and everything handcrafted and unusual.
